5 Elements That Make A Timeless Interior Design

As interior designers, we aim to create timeless, beautiful, and functional spaces that can continue to inspire. A timeless design is a design that can stand the test of time, is not easily identifiable by the decade in which it was designed, and continues to build character over the years due to the quality of materials and design choices. We are all aware that having to redo a space every other year or even every five years is not always financially possible or good for our environment. But getting wrapped up in the newest interior design fads, colors, or materials can be tempting. Here are five easy components to follow in your next project while still having the flexibility to incorporate some current trends.

Quality and Natural Materials

Selecting high-quality materials that will stand the test of time and take normal wear and tear gracefully will automatically set your space for timeless success. Natural materials such as wood, stone, and organic fabrics will have natural wear, but unlike cheaper materials, the aged look will continue to add character to the space.

Neutral Colors As Your Base

Selecting a neutral color palette for your finishes, permanent fixtures, or wall colors is a great way to ensure your interior design will remain classic and timeless. As trends come and go, there is one truth that remains, and that is that neutral colors are always easier to combine with other colors. It's always easier to update the space by bringing in new textures or accessories that will incorporate more trendy styles or colors than it is to rip out finishes on permanent fixtures like a fireplace or countertops

Combining Design Styles

One quick way to date your space is to go all in on one design style. Design styles are constantly rotating, similar to fashion trends, and are sometimes associated with a specific decade. Therefore, going all in on that farm style or industrial may not be the best way to achieve a timeless look. The blending of styles can create a more balanced feel regardless of when the space was designed. For example, the mix of traditional architecture with sleek contemporary furniture or materials will make the space feel timeless and not bound by a specific decade that of course will date your space much faster.

Symmetry and Proportional Furniture

There's always something so satisfying about having symmetry in interior design. It gives a sense of tidiness and good flow to any space, and just as symmetry is pleasing to the eye, well-proportional furniture is too. When furniture is too large or too small, it disrupts that symmetry, making the space feel awkward and outdated much faster.

Good Flow

Creating a good flow from room to room will always be a top priority in good interior design because it brings functionality along with aesthetically pleasing transitions. Being able to function efficiently in your space, carry out tasks with ease, and comfortably gather with family or friends will always be in style.
